Our horses are weaned around 6 months of age, at which point the
breaking process begins. These foals are handled for a period of 6 weeks
after weaning at which point they are taught to be caught, haltered and led.
They gain an early familiarity with the processes that will need to be
second nature to them as they become part adult horses.
After this initial period, the foals are returned to the paddock for
some six months to a year to grow and develop. When they are brought back
into the stables, they gain familiarity with the sounds and activity of the stable area.
They are taught to accept a saddle and bridle as well as learning essential actions such as picking up their feet to be shod. At around two years of age, they will be brought in again for the final stage of the breaking process.
They will be ridden in the round yard and arena before being taken on short rides around the property. They will be introduced to the polo stick and will gradually become comfortable with these new tasks. This process can take weeks to months, with some horses progressing much faster than others.
